I’m about to record another motivation video on goals. So many people think they don’t work and are a waste of time.
Let me enlighten you all.
In 2002, there was a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
It evaluated surgery for patients with severe knee pain.
The patients in the study were divided into three groups.
* Group 1: Dr. Bruce Moseley, the surgeon, shaved the damaged cartilage in the knee of one group
* Group 2: Dr. Moseley flushed out the knee joint, removing material thought to be causing the inflammatory effect
* Group 3: This group got “fake” surgery. The patient was sedated, and Dr. Moseley made three standard incisions and then talked and acted just as he would have during a real surgery
As you can see - the first 2 groups had real work done on them, and the third group had a fake surgery performed.
All three groups were prescribed the same postoperative care, which included an exercise program.
The results were shocking…
The first 2 groups who received surgery, as expected, improved.
But as for the 3rd group, the ones who had fake surgery done on them…
They improved just as much!
The results were clear to Dr. Moseley:
“My skill as a surgeon had no benefit on these patients. The entire benefit of surgery for osteoarthritis of the knee was the placebo effect.'”
In a nutshell that’s your mind convincing you of the outcome, and making it so.
Still don’t believe in the power of goals.
